Background of the Study
Digital narratives have become essential in shaping how meanings are constructed and communicated online. In Nigeria, Facebook posts serve as a primary medium where digital storytelling influences semantic development. Users incorporate anecdotes, cultural references, and emotive language in their posts, contributing to evolving semantic interpretations and the emergence of new word meanings. This study explores how digital narratives in Facebook posts facilitate semantic shifts by blending traditional linguistic expressions with modern digital creativity (Ibrahim, 2023). The interplay between visual elements, textual content, and cultural context in these narratives creates an environment where meanings are continuously negotiated and redefined. As a result, new semantic markers emerge that reflect the dynamic socio-cultural landscape of Nigeria. By comparing various Facebook posts, the research aims to understand the mechanisms by which digital narratives drive semantic change, offering insights into the broader implications of these developments for language evolution (Obi, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although digital narratives in Facebook posts are a significant driver of semantic change in Nigeria, there is limited systematic research addressing how these narratives impact meaning development. Traditional semantic models often fail to capture the complexities of digital storytelling, leaving a gap in our understanding of how online narratives contribute to the evolution of language. This study seeks to address this gap by examining the specific semantic shifts induced by digital narratives, thereby clarifying the relationship between multimedia storytelling and language meaning (Chinwe, 2024).
